Author:
Boron carbide’s excellent high-temperature oxidation resistance and low density give it a distinct advantage in extreme‑temperature environments; however, its highly covalent bonding structure makes sintering challenging. As a material with outstanding properties, boron carbide finds extensive applications in refractory, wear‑resistant, and lightweight protective industries. Its superior high‑temperature oxidation resistance, exceptional hardness, low density, high melting point, and remarkable wear resistance make it an ideal choice for these fields.
◉ Sintering difficulties
Due to its highly covalent crystal structure, it is difficult to sinter into a dense state at elevated temperatures, which limits its widespread application. The high proportion of covalent bonds results in a low self-diffusion coefficient, while the formation of a surface oxide layer further suppresses surface reactivity, making it challenging to achieve 90% theoretical density below a sintering temperature of 2300°C. Even under conditions of no external pressure and in the absence of sintering aids, achieving 90% density remains elusive even at 2300°C, severely constraining the scope of boron carbide’s applications.

Sintering Process and Technological Innovation
◉ Introduction to Traditional Sintering Processes
The exploration of diversified sintering processes, particularly the introduction of external pressure and sintering aids to enhance densification, holds promise for expanding the applications of boron carbide. With continuous advances in technology, boron carbide sintering has become increasingly diverse, opening up new avenues for improving its density. Techniques such as pressureless sintering, hot-press sintering, hot-isostatic pressing, spark plasma sintering, and microwave sintering have been successively investigated and implemented, providing novel pathways for achieving high-density boron carbide. Meanwhile, sintering additives—including elemental substances, oxides, and carbides—have been shown to significantly promote the densification of boron carbide.
◉ New Sintering Technology
Spark plasma sintering and microwave sintering outperform conventional methods, demonstrating significant advantages for the sintering of boron carbide. These advanced sintering techniques exhibit marked benefits in producing highly dense boron carbide materials. With rapid heating, short sintering cycles, lower sintering temperatures, and high efficiency, spark plasma sintering and microwave sintering offer effective pathways for fabricating high‑density boron carbide ceramics.

Application Prospects
◉ Refractory Materials
Boron carbide enhances the oxidation resistance and overall performance of refractory materials by forming a protective liquid phase and increasing densification. In the refractory industry, boron carbide primarily functions as an antioxidant and a sintering aid; it can preferentially oxidize to generate a protective liquid phase and, through reactions with oxides present in the material, form a high-viscosity, low-melting-point borate protective layer, thereby significantly improving the oxidation resistance of carbon-containing refractories.
